PART E · Resistance to sound

Do I need sound insulation testing

Sound insulation testing may be required for separating walls and floors in new homes or dwellings created by conversion. The answer depends on the building, the elements involved and the approved compliance route. Ask before construction, not when the buyer requests the completion certificate.

What does a sound test measure

Testing assesses the performance of the completed construction under the relevant procedure. Airborne tests assess sound transmission; impact tests assess relevant floor performance.

A test is different from a manufacturer's laboratory result. Site junctions, penetrations and workmanship influence the result in the actual building.

Is Robust Details an alternative

For eligible new dwellings, the registered Robust Details route can provide an alternative to pre-completion testing of the relevant separating elements. Registration and compliance with the selected detail are essential.

Simply using a drawing that resembles a Robust Detail is not enough. Do not assume the route is available for a conversion or for an assembly that has been altered.

When should testing be arranged

Agree the testing plan with the designer and building control body. Book an appropriate testing provider and establish the condition the building needs to be in when testing takes place.

Build time for investigation and correction into the programme. A test at the very end can expose defects after kitchens, bathrooms and finishes are installed.

What happens if the building fails

Investigate the construction and sound paths before choosing remedial work. The weakest route may be a junction or opening rather than the centre of the separating wall.

For example, upgrading a wall lining may not resolve sound passing through a connected ceiling void.

Keep the test reports, any remedial details and retest results. The practical goal is verified performance, supported by records that explain what was built and how it was assessed.

This guide provides general information about building regulations in England. Requirements, amendments and transitional arrangements can depend on the project and its dates. Confirm the applicable requirements with your designer and building control body.
