PART J · Combustion appliances
Do I need approval to install a wood burning stove
Installing a wood burning stove normally involves building regulations requirements. The work includes the appliance and the associated hearth, air supply, flue and protection to nearby construction. Using an existing fireplace does not mean the installation needs no assessment.
Can the existing chimney be used
It may be possible, but condition and suitability need checking. The chosen appliance, chimney arrangement and manufacturer's instructions influence the solution.
Ask how the chimney will be assessed and what work is proposed. An unused chimney should not be assumed ready for a new stove simply because it appears intact.
What does Part J require
Relevant provisions cover combustion air, safe discharge, protection of the building, carbon monoxide warning and installation information. The details must fit the particular stove and location.
Clearances and hearth arrangements need to be designed before the room is decorated. A decorative surround can conceal combustible materials or make the installation harder to inspect.
How is the work certified
An eligible installer registered under an appropriate competent person scheme may be able to self-certify the work. Otherwise, arrange the appropriate building control route before starting.
Check the installer's registration and the work it covers. A professional-looking invoice is not the same thing as the required compliance record.
Are there separate restrictions
Check whether smoke control requirements apply to the location and intended use. Those rules are separate from Part J. Ask about the proposed appliance and fuel before buying either.
What should I receive afterwards
Keep the relevant certificate, commissioning information, appliance instructions and information about the flue installation. Understand the sweeping, servicing and alarm maintenance needed.
Avoid changing the appliance or its setting without reviewing the installation. A replacement stove with a different output can raise new questions about air supply and clearances.
